Jubilee Garden Officially Opens – A Sustainable, Award-Winning Community Space in Mumbles
On Monday 28th April, Mumbles Community Council proudly celebrated the official opening of the Jubilee Sensory Garden—a vibrant, inclusive green space designed to support wellbeing, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
The weather was glorious for the opening event, where local residents, volunteers, and project partners came together to explore the transformed garden. Once a neglected site, Jubilee Garden is now a shining example of how small urban green spaces can make a big difference.
National Recognition
We’re delighted to announce that the project has already received national acclaim—winning Best Environmental Project at the One Voice Wales Awards 2025. This recognition celebrates our commitment to practical, community-led environmental action.
What’s in the Garden?
Jubilee Garden is more than just a green space—it’s a place for people and nature to thrive together. Designed with accessibility, sensory experiences, and sustainability in mind, the garden includes:
- Sensory beds filled with herbs, flowers, and tactile plants
- A rain garden that filters pollutants and reduces runoff
- A green roof on the garden shelter to support pollinators and harvest rainwater
- Wildlife-friendly features like bug hotels, bird boxes, and pollinator friendly planting
- Educational interpretation panels to help visitors learn about biodiversity and climate resilience
The garden provides a peaceful and immersive natural space for all ages and abilities.
Partnership with Llanfair House
A key partner in the Jubilee Garden project was Llanfair House, a local mental health rehabilitation centre based in Mumbles. Llanfair House provides residential support for individuals recovering from mental health challenges, with a strong focus on building independence, confidence, and wellbeing through meaningful activity.
From the earliest stages of the project, residents and staff at Llanfair House were actively involved in shaping the vision for the garden.
As the project progressed, residents contributed to hands-on activities including planting and maintenance of habitat features. Their ongoing involvement not only helped bring the garden to life, but also created opportunities for connection with nature, creativity, and community engagement.
The garden will continue to be used by Llanfair House residents as a therapeutic and inclusive outdoor space—supporting mental health recovery while fostering a sense of pride and ownership.
This partnership reflects Mumbles Community Council’s commitment to inclusive, health-focused green spaces that bring people and nature together.
Built and Installed by Our Team – With Community Support
The garden was installed by Mumbles Community Council’s Environment and Sustainability Engagement Officer and Groundsman, who led the transformation of the site from concept to completion.
They were supported throughout by biodiversity design consultants, who ensured the space would maximise its ecological value, and by local volunteers who contributed to planting, site preparation, and creative features.
This collaborative approach ensured the garden met both environmental goals and the needs of the local community—and it has already become a space for connection, learning, and wellbeing.
A Big thank you to our partners and funders

Jubilee Garden is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to transform a neglected site into a vibrant, inclusive community garden that supports nature, wellbeing, and climate resilience.
We would also like to thank Swansea City Council, the landowner of the Jubilee Garden site, for granting Mumbles Community Council long-term permission to develop and maintain the garden.
Their support has enabled us to bring new life to this important community space and ensure its protection and use for years to come.
